This is all your fault Eastenders fans.

It turns out that Cruachan Hydro Power plant in Scotland is used for this exact purpose. It’s built inside a mountain and when needed it opens gates and empties a Loch at the top into a Loch at the bottom. When it’s not needed anymore (after everyone has a cup of tea) it pumps it back up to the top.
